Q:What is a CCRC and what are the benefits?

There are many important benefits of living in a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC). In order to fully understand these benefits, it’s important to understand what a CCRC is.

Simply put, a CCRC is a particular type of retirement community that offers a maintenance free lifestyle along with several levels of health care on one campus:

  • Independent Living for residents who don’t need personal assistance;
  • Assisted Living for people who require a little help with the activities of daily living; and
  • Nursing Care in an on-campus Health Care Center.

Having several levels of care available on campus is an incredible benefit—it provides you with the security of knowing that, if you need Assisted Living or Nursing Care at some point in time, it's right onsite.

Q:Are all CCRCs the same?

No. Some require a large up-front entrance fee and offer an all-inclusive health care plan, while others, like Birch Hill Terrace, have a lower entrance fee that includes a number of free health care days each year. You get to keep more of your own money for investing and estate planning.

Q:Am I buying an apartment or a condo?

No, there is no real estate ownership involved, which means no tax bill or worries about fluctuations in the real estate market. You have lifetime use of your apartment or cottage, and the security of knowing you’ve planned for your future health care needs.
